![]() It may not be a proper duel, but it gave me chills. ![]() There are no lightsaber battles in Rogue One, but there is the amazing and terrifying scene at the end with Darth Vader breaching the rebel ship. The problem is, I'm having a really hard time deciding which one was better. Star Wars films are action films, so the fighting and flying is a very important part of the story and deserves its own category in this discussion. The Force Awakens also has the most striking visuals, and avoids the big CGI blunder with Grand Moff Tarkin.ĭeathtroopers are actually frightening. The Force Awakens gives all of its characters and locations the time they need to be fully fleshed out, while Rogue One tromps recklessly from one planet to the next in a confusing jumble that mars the first third of the film. Abrams breathes life into every scene, while Gareth Edwards' vision of Star Wars often feels a little flat and lifeless. In terms of Direction-pacing, cinematography, visual effects and so forth- The Force Awakens handily beats Rogue One. Mostly this wasn't the hero arc we see with Rey (which was actually quite different from Luke's) but the recycling of the super weapon into just an even bigger and more scary Death Star that can still be destroyed with relative ease by the Resistance. While I didn't mind this-I think it fits well into the cyclical nature of the franchise and its storytelling techniques-it did leave me feeling a bit letdown. Meanwhile The Force Awakens is in many ways a retelling of A New Hope. It also fills in some major plot holes, which is nice. In the category of Originality, the clear winner is Rogue One. The story is another Death Star-focused plot, which I wish had been saved for later, but it still tells a unique story with unique characters and its ending ties in directly to the beginning of A New Hope. If you want to watch my video explanation for the film I like better of the two, check it out before we get into the bulk of the text: Oh, and Han Solo is killed by his son, Kylo Ren, an evil Dark Jedi in training. The good guys face down an evil Dark Jedi and blow up and even bigger Death Star, and primary protagonist Rey is revealed to have serious Force powers. The First Order has replaced the Empire as bad guys, and the Resistance has replaced the Alliance. It takes place many years after Return of the Jedi, with the rise of a new threat and new heroes to combat it. Second-unit filming in Abu Dhabi began in late April 2014, while principal photography began in May.Įarly peeks at the sets have included hints of what was thought to be Tatooine (later confirmed as the planet Jakku) and The Millennium Falcon.Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh "main" film chronologically both in the fiction and the real world. However, current and future material published under the new rulings (such as Star War: Rebels or any future video game titles) will be part of the new canon, Disney and LucasFilms holding the rights to void that if they so wish.įilming begun for Episode 7 in London and Abu Dhabi. ![]() This clarification follows on the heels of a firm identification of all material outside the six films and Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series as extra-canonical. A revised canon will be released at a later date. However, Disney and LucasFilms have reserved the right to pick and choose any of the EU lore to use for the new continuity if they so wish. Previous Expanded Universe stories taking place in this era are now regarded as Legends. The new films supplant all previous Expanded Universe Changes lore and content taking place after Episode 6. ![]()
